Vandread: 1st Stage

Introduction

Through an unknown set of circumstances, men and women have come to live on separate home worlds, living totally independent of each other. In fact, the two genders actually fear and hate each other, not knowing that they once lived together in harmony. Each side sees the other as hostile and so constructs powerful tools of war to defend themselves. The men who live on planet Tarak refit the mother ship that brought them to their current home, and launch into space with their new mechas: the Bangatas. Unfortunately, a young parts engineer named Hibiki is in the process of stealing one of the Bangatas and goes along with the ship when it launches. Much sooner than expected the men come across a crew of female pirates and are locked in a fierce battle. The situation grows even worse when the men use a new weapon that ends up fusing the pirate ship with part of their own mother ship. Hibiki is caught up in this mess along with two other men: Duero and Bart. With their comrades having retreated, these 3 must deal with living alongside women on this new ship dubbed the Nirvana. It soon becomes a necessity for the two genders to cooperate as they come across an entirely new alien threat. With only a few of the women’s Dreads and Hibiki’s Bangata, the crew of the Nirvana face this new threat head on as they attempt to make their way back to the female home world: Majele. The young Dread pilot Dita is infatuated with Hibiki and insists on following him around everywhere. Hibiki soon grows tired of this, refusing to accept the word of a female and despising Duero, as he seems to gladly help this new crew. After a few small skirmishes the crew of the Nirvana learn more and more of this new alien threat. It seems that these enemies wish to harvest men and women, making them the most malevolent beings ever to threaten Tarak and Majele. Realising that this fight is for the survival of their entire species, Hibiki, Dita et al must utilise the power of the Plexis that powers their vessels and overcome all obstacles in their path.

 Character Biographies

 Hibiki

Hibiki is a young and foolhardy male who has always been looked down upon for his position as a third class citizen. After being egged on by his fellow workers, Hibiki attempts to steal one of the new Bangatas. Sadly the ship is launched 2 hours before its scheduled departure and Hibiki is launched into space along with the soldiers of Tarak. Following the battle with the female pirates, Hibiki is stuck on the Nirvana with no way home and no other option than to collaborate with these women. The young Dread pilot Dita is constantly annoying Hibiki and drives him to the brink of insanity. Hibiki hates dealing with women more than any of the other males, often referring to his pride and dignity as factors that prohibit him from even talking with them. Despite this boorish attitude Hibiki’s skills as a Bangata pilot are crucial to the survival of the Nirvana and the entire crew.

 Dita

The innocent and light-hearted Dita is the first female that Hibiki ever encounters. Along with the majority of the Nirvana crew, Dita enjoys the more trivial aspects of life and often spends time making what she considers to be pretty or cute toys. Though she may be a little lacking in intellect, Dita always has a smile on her face and Hibiki’s rants don’t phase her one bit. It is clear that the girl feels something for “Mr. Alien” and she is always the first in line to join with his Bangata out on the battlefield. When other Dread pilots like Jura try to get between her and her man, Dita goes on the defensive and refuses to back down. Her kind words often help other members of the ship, providing some hope and solace when a situation arises that seems impossible to overcome.

 Meia

Meia is very unlike her comrades. She is always very reserved and quite cold towards others. Clearly she is a born leader and a crucial part of the Nirvana, perhaps explaining why she feels the need to keep her feelings bottled up. She has come a long way from the little starlet she once was, having been taken in by the Boss at an early age. Whenever danger arises Meia is the first to leap into battle but also the first to blame herself if things go wrong. This attitude is very counter productive and only isolates Meia from the other crewmembers. Perhaps her best asset is that she looks at things with a sensible head and manages to stay on top of most situations. Without her authoritative presence, the other Dread pilots would most likely fall into disarray, unable to operate alone.

 Duero

The tall and sleek Duero was meant to be a part of the mother ship crew that left Tarak. After becoming stuck on Nirvana, he took over the role of ships doctor but also helps out on the engineering side of things. Unlike Bart and Hibiki he does not fear the women or even mind working alongside them. Not once does the good doctor loose his cool or sense of right and wrong. Not discriminating between man and woman is a very commendable attribute and one that a few others should take note of. Any sort of romance between Duero and Parfait is kept quiet, but the two intellectuals clearly share many things in common.

 Bart

Bart is the ships local buffoon. Not only is he a suck up, but he would claim that black is white if he thought it would get him out of a tight spot. Initially, the only reason that he is kept around is because of his ability to pilot the Nirvana, something that no other crewmember can seem to do. As time goes on he learns to control the ship with a greater degree of skill and prior planning, however he is still a goof ball. All the other men seem to have one girl that they share something in common with and Bart chooses to place his affections on the sub-commander BC. Little does he know the mistake he is making.

 Parfait

Parfait is the ship engineer and the resident “geek” of Nirvana. Unlike the other women on the ship, she doesn’t pay too much attention to her looks or figure, but rather focuses on keeping the ship operating. At times she dreams up some rather hair brained schemes but they always seem to work out with a little help from Duero. The strange little machine known as Pyoro often hangs around Parfait and his complex systems are helpful in operating the Nirvana. At first Parfait is just as scared of men as everyone else, but with a little bit of time and contact with Duero, she doubles back on this mind set.
