Cowboy Bebop

Introduction

In a future where the police are helpless against the hoards of thieves, bandits, murderers, drug traffickers and all other types of criminals that roam the solar system, bounty hunters are called upon to track down the bad guys and bring them in. Two of these bounty hunters team up together aboard the space ship Bebop and this is where our story begins. These bounty hunters, Spike and Jet, seem perpetually broke and forced to make do with things such as eating special beef…minus the beef. The two men pay close attention to all the latest bounties on offer, willing to scrap for every Wulong going. Through the course of their journey they meet another bounty hunter named Faye and a young hacking wizard named Edward. Apparently each crewmember has some dark past to hide and no matter how hard they try to forget, they seem destined to face it again.

Character Biographies

Spike Spiegel

Spike is an easy going, laid back kind of guy: lax in his approach to life and relentless in his approach to bounties. A former member of the Red Dragons (a mafia crime syndicate based on Mars) Spike is highly skilled in numerous forms of combat, but specialises in Jeet Kune Do; the art form developed by Bruce Lee. Today Spike lives quite happily aboard the space cruiser Bebop along with fellow bounty hunter Jet Black. The pair tends to be a little low on funds, but they always manage to get by. Just as frightening as it is admirable, Spike lives without fear because he has nothing left to lose. His past is something he would rather forget, in particular his relationship with Julia and her subsequent disappearance. Though the series takes many twists and turns, it only leads in one direction: back to the past.

Jet Black

Jet is the owner of the Bebop and a former member of the ISSP (Inter Solar System Police). Back in the day he was considered a great law enforcement officer and really strove to make a difference. However, Jet soon came to realise that being a part of the police was too small time and most of the force was corrupt in any case. So eventually he choose the life of a bounty hunter and met up with the young Spike Spiegel. The pair formed a strong team and worked well together, this is the situation at the start of the series. Due to an unfortunate accident Jet lost his left arm during his time as a police officer. To compensate for this he now uses a synthetic arm that provides all the movement and flexibility of a real one, though maybe not the quite same feeling. Being the oldest group member he acts almost like a father figure; keeping everyone in line while still maintaining the ship and cooking the food.

Faye Valentine

Once the hunted, now the hunter, Faye becomes a bounty hunter after teaming up with Jet and Spike aboard the Bebop. However, unlike both men Faye’s past haunts her not because of what went on in it, but because she cannot remember it. Though she has the looks of a young woman, Faye has actually been in stasis for over 40 years while doctors researched a cure for her disease. After re-emerging from her frozen state, Faye found that she could not remember any of what went on prior to her hibernation. Accumulating doctors bills over the years have left the girl in serious debt, one that she cannot afford to pay. The only thing this beautiful bounty hunter wants is to discover who she once was and finally put her past behind her.

Edward

Ed, or Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IIII as she likes to call herself, is a young female hacker who invites herself to join the crew of the Bebop. It may seem a little insane that a girl is called Ed, but then this fits perfectly with her quirky attitude and child-like behaviour. Since she has no mother and doesn’t know anything about her father, Ed is happy to be amongst friends on the Bebop and quickly becomes an essential team member. Known across the web as Radical Edward, Ed is one of the most famous and fearless hackers around. This is evident when Faye decides not to honour an agreement to take Ed aboard the Bebop, so the young girl hacks into the ships systems via remote control and begins to direct the ship back towards her. When at last we do meet Ed’s father, it is pretty obvious where she gets her bizarre personality.

Ein

Going by appearance, Ein is a mere Welsh Corgi of 2 years old. Though the dog appears to have a curious nature, his actions do not depict him to be anything more at first glance. In truth however, Ein is a "Data Dog". Illegally designed by an ominous company whos name and purpose illude the plot of the series. Ein is indeed priceless on the Black Market, though the crew on board the Bebop haven't the slightest idea of Ein's abilities. At times, it seems as though Ein has the ability to understand human speach and at others we see Ein operating many technical devices. Though it is never confirmed what is the purpose of his creation.

Vicious

You might say that Vicious is the complete opposite of Spike. He is cruel, cold-hearted and totally ruthless. At one time the two were the best of friends, fighting shoulder to shoulder during the mafia wars and constantly watching each other’s backs. However, as so many great stories go, the friends were turned against each other because of the love of a woman: Julia. Knowing that Spike planned to leave the syndicate, Vicious prevented Julia from going with him and in turn destroyed Spike’s hopes and dreams. Using all his cunning Vicious proceeded to remove the heads of Red Dragon and soon became the syndicate’s new leader. In combat Vicious relies upon his katana more than any gun, a sign of his own joy at fighting and distain for others.

Julia

Perhaps Julia is the one person Spike wishes to forget, or perhaps she is the one person he wishes to always remember. Julia is the one woman who came between Spike and Vicious and turned them into bitter enemies; each intent on the others demise. Though she clearly loves Spike, Julia betrayed him those short few years ago in the cruellest manner possible, hence Spike’s famous phrase, “I was killed once before by a woman...” Regardless, Spike would give anything to be reunited with his love; hanging on every rumour of her location.
