Introduction
The year is cosmic era 70 and following the tragedy of Bloody Valentine the tension between Zaft and earth has led to armed conflict. Though many expected the Earth Alliance to easily take care of the Zaft forces, the conflict has raged on for 11 months already. This has led the Earth Alliance to construct 5 new Mobile Suits and a powerful war ship: the Archangel. These suits: the Strike, Aegis, Blitz, Buster and Duel are all made from pure Gundanium and are known as Gundams. The Gundams and the Archangel are well-kept secrets, constructed on the neutral Space Colony of Heliopolis. However, it seems Zaft has gained knowledge of these new weapons and soon enough Heliopolis is under attack. As Zaft soldiers assault the colony, an elite team of pilots steal 4 of the Gundams and make their escape. A young student named Kira Yamato now finds himself piloting the remaining Strike Gundam and is forced to fight back against the Zaft. Following a short battle, Heliopolis is destroyed, leaving the Archangel and Strike far from friendly territory and forced into making their way back to earth. As if the situation was not uncomfortable enough, it emerges that Kira is in fact a coordinator, meaning that he is now fighting against his own kind and in particular, his best friend and now pilot of the Aegis; Asuran Zara.
Character Biographies
Kira Yamato
Kira has been a student at Heliopolis for quite a while and in that time he has made some very close friends. Some time ago he became best friends with a fellow coordinator named Asuran Zara, but now with the course of the war, these best friends have been pitted against each other. Due to his genetic enhancements, Kira is an incredible Mobile Suit pilot and is even able to reprogram the Strike’s operating system mid-combat. His skills are the only thing keeping Zaft from taking the last Gundam and the Archangel. As much as he hates war, Kira fights to protect his friends on board the Archangel, though more than anything he wishes to stop fighting Asuran.
Asuran Zara
Asuran is part of the Zaft military and a very accomplished Mobile Suit pilot. After stealing the Aegis Gundam, Asuran heads off with his comrades, hoping to capture the Strike and the Archangel. His meeting with Kira Yamato is completely by chance and the thought of being on opposing sides of a war clearly concerns him. As he is also a coordinator, Asuran is able to pilot the Aegis with tremendous skill, perhaps being the only pilot able to match Kira on the battlefield. He is also engaged to Rakusa Klein, the daughter of a high-ranking Zaft official and the love of his life. Through all the fighting Asuran still cannot understand why his best friend would choose to side with the enemy.
Murrue Ramius
With the captain of the Archangel is killed during Zaft’s initial attack on Heliopolis, Murrue as the highest-ranking officer takes charge. She is a member of the Earth Alliance military, but also a kind and understanding woman. She first meets Kira Yamato when they both end up inside the cockpit of the Strike Gundam and are forced into combat with Zaft. Her tactical knowledge is invaluable and keeps the crew of the Archangel alive on many occasions. She is very sympathetic to Kira’s current set of circumstances and never forces him to fight at any time. More than anything she understands that Kira is just a boy and more importantly a boy who has no desire to wage war.
Raww Le Cruz
Le Cruz is the commander of the Zaft forces that attack Heliopolis and steal the Mobile Suits. Not one for simply giving orders, Le Cruz is heralded as a fantastic pilot and is both revered and feared for his battle prowess. As the race to reach earth begins, Le Cruz becomes locked in a strategic game of wits with Captain Ramius as the two attempt to outsmart one another. Though he may be a Zaft officer, this does not mean he is without honour and clearly he understands the difficulties that Asuran faces in having to fight with his closest friend. Le Cruz also chooses to wear an elegant mask over his face, only removing it in the sanctity of his own quarters.
Moorer Fraga
Captain Moorer Fraga is the last Mobile Armour pilot of Heliopolis and for a very good reason. Even in the face of the Gundams Fraga is unwavering in his loyalty and will to defend his comrades to the end. His fighter ship, the Zero, is an impressive piece of machinery, capable of out gunning and out manoeuvring most opponents. Captain Fraga also seems to be the only one concerned that Zaft are not the only ones who might misuse the Strike, so he instructs Kira to lock down the Operating System so that no one else may pilot it. The captain has a long-standing history with Raww Le Cruz as the two have faced each other in combat before and seem destined to do so again.
Rakusa Klein
Rakusa is discovered deep in space by the crew of the Archangel, having escaped her ship in a small life pod. Miss Klein is the daughter of a high-ranking Zaft official and is to be wed to Asuran Zara. Just like Asuran and Kira, Rakusa is a coordinator, but certainly not a soldier. Her beautiful voice is most likely a result of gene manipulation but her friendliness is certainly not. With her at all times is the small robot Haru. This was a gift from Asuran and in fact he has made many of these small robots for her. There is nothing Rakusa would like more than to see Asuran and Kira together as friends again.
Frey Alster
Having truly enjoyed her time in Heliopolis meant that Frey was deeply hurt when the colony was destroyed. She appears to be quite a tactless girl and hates all coordinators. She even goes so far as to accuse Kira of only pretending to fight and not helping them at all. She may seem unfair and even hurtful to others, but this can be put down to her overwhelming grief. Frey grows even colder to the others when Zaft kills her father, yet over time she realises it is not their fault. As the Archangel approaches earth, Frey decides that she can make a difference to the war by joining the military and fighting for what’s right.
